Marriage is a social union or legal contract between individuals that creates kinship. It is an institution in which interpersonal relationships, usually intimate and sexual, are acknowledged in a variety of ways, depending on the culture or subculture in which it is found. Such a union may also be called matrimony, while the ceremony that marks its beginning is usually called a wedding.

People marry for many reasons, including one or more of the following: legal, social, emotional, economical, spiritual, and religious. These might include arranged marriages, family obligations, the legal establishment of a nuclear family unit, the legal protection of children and public declaration of commitment.

Marriage practices are very diverse across cultures, may take many forms, and are often formalized by a wedding. The act of marriage usually creates normative or legal obligations between the individuals involved. In some societies these obligations also extend to certain family members of the married persons. Almost all cultures that recognize marriage also recognize adultery as a violation of the terms of marriage.

Marriage is usually recognized by the state, a religious authority, or both. It is often viewed as a contract. Civil marriage is the legal concept of marriage as a governmental institution irrespective of religious affiliation, in accordance with marriage laws of the jurisdiction. If recognized by the state, by the religion(s) to which the parties belong or by society in general, the act of marriage changes the personal and social status of the individuals who enter into it.

Whats the difference between marriage and civil union?
Q. I read somewhere that marriage has more benefits then civil union, but they didn't specify on what they were. Would someone be so kind to tell me the benefits that marriage has that civil union does not?

A. There are a lot of differences. One is that civil unions are not recognized by federal law - there are none of the federal benefits of marriage given to those in civil unions. Also, civil unions are not portable. You cannot take them from state to state. Furthermore, the people I know want to get married. Not civil unioned. Who wants to civil union their beloved, when they could marry them instead?

What were the dynamics of marriage in the 19th century?
Q. I know that women had few legal rights but what kind of unofficial roles did women and men have in marriage. Did women really obey their husbands? Did husbands really command their wives? Was it very different from modern marriages or essentially similar?

A. I've had the interesting experience of knowing some Middle Eastern Muslims from Lebanon. Now remember, this culture, supposedly the women are second class citizens, etc., and it looks that way in public for the most part. However, back at home, the woman is boss. I think that no matter what the "official" legal and/or cultural rights assigned to women are, they have, throughout history, known how to control their men, by either nagging, cutting them off from sex, giving them bad food, etc. I think that the truth is, in this "enlightened feminist age" more women are abused by men, than they were back then, and this is especially true in inner cities, where the family unit has been devalued by the welfare check, so men and women no longer… [cont.]
